A professor at Chico California State University has tried something he called “an online linguistic experiment.” Approximately fifteen students who were enrolled in his Portuguese class got together in a language lab waiting to be connected to peers in Brazilian universities. Without help from professional Portuguese translation they were expected to chat with students in Brazil. At the beginning they were supposed to introduce themselves and then make arrangements to chat again from their homes or any other convenient location. Before the semester ends the professor plans to ask the student’s feedback on how the experiment went. Most students have already expressed that they were nervous about chatting with native Portuguese speakers in real time.
They felt that they were not prepared to come up with words and sentences in the Portuguese language when they were put on the spot. Of course, the professor did not expect the students to be as good as professional translators who have years of experience providing Portuguese translation services. However, they still wished to present a favorable first impression. The language professor believes that his class will enjoy the experiment because students will have a chance to interact with other students rather than listen to his lectures every session. If this experience inspires students at Chico University to study in Brazil they have already made connections through this experiment.
