Indonesian is the official language of Indonesia. Indonesia is one of the world’s most populous countries as well as the third largest democracy in the world. It is one of the biggest economies in South East Asia and is predicted to grow into the tenth largest in the next few decades. These developments have increased the demand for professional Indonesian translation services as the country prepares to expand its international presence. Among others, Indonesia is a member of the UN, WTO, IMF, Asian Development Bank, and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). Indonesian is a contemporary language related to Malay that came into existence in 1945 when Indonesia declared its independence. Nevertheless, the Dutch colonization has considerably influenced the Indonesian language. Moreover, some Indonesian words stem from Portuguese and Chinese.
The native inhabitants of Indonesia refer to their language as Bahasa Indonesia, literally meaning the language of Indonesia. Indonesian is constantly evolving and borrowing new words from other languages. The Indonesian language is written in Latin script similar to Dutch, using a simplified system of spellings, Soewandi Spelling, which is named after their former Minister of Education. In Indonesian there are two ways of expressing we, depending on whether or not one is including the person being spoken to. In general, the word order in a sentence is subject, verb, and object. Indonesian verbs do not express tenses. Rather, tense is indicated by time adverbs. The Indonesian language infrequently uses gendered words; the same neutral word is used to express he and she. Furthermore, no distinction is made for boyfriend and girlfriend. The same word, pacar, is used to express both words. With that said, some words such as putri (daughter) and putra (son) that were borrowed from other languages are gendered. Indonesian is relatively simple for foreigners to learn in terms of phonology and grammar.
