Efforts to Limit the Flow of Romanians to the UK

According to reports the British government is concerned over the expiration of policies that currently cap the number of Romanians who can immigrate to the UK. Since Romania joined the European Union its citizens have the right to enjoy the same rights as the citizens of the countries they move to as long as they stay within the EU. The British government has used Romanian translation services in order to run campaigns that deter Romanians from moving to the UK.

The British officials are considering ad campaigns that highlight the hardships and discomfort that migrants experience. Since quotas will expire in 2014 the UK government is hoping to use these campaigns to discourage a potential wave of Romanians who seek to enter the country. They have translated their posters from English to Romanian and tried to spread negative words about life in UK for an immigrant. The themes of poster campaigns mostly revolved around the UK’s poor weather and high unemployment rates. In response to these campaigns, politicians in Bucharest have stated that out of the three million Romanians who are now working outside of Romania, only approximately 100,000 had settled in the United Kingdom over the past seven years.

Furthermore, they expressed that the UK is making false claims about the status of Romanians in the UK. Most of them have been successful and have proved to be valued members of the society. Some claim that such fears are unfounded because Romanians have significantly contributed to the UK. For example, they point to a famous stadium in London that was completed by Romanians.
