Nina Cassian, a Romanian translator and poet, died in New York City on April 15, 2014 at the age of 89. While she lived in Romania she and other writers tried to write books that the regime would approve of. However, Romanian authorities removed her books from bookstores after she obtained political asylum in the U.S. In the United States she relied on her language skills to deliver Romanian translation services for the works she enjoyed. She also translated her own writing into English. In Romania she was mostly appreciated after her death. Following her death President Traian Basescu hailed her as a translator, poet, and songwriter. During her career as a translator she translated the works of Bertolt Brecht, Moliere, and William Shakespeare. In addition, she wrote many books for children.
Her writing and translations were published in publications such as The Atlantic Monthly and The New Yorker. In total she wrote fifty books. Her last book was translated into Italian. Her translation skills enabled her to translate her works for readers who did not understand the Romanian language.
